The Associated Press reports that Kimberly Mathers, the estranged wife of rapper Eminem, was arrested on July 8 in suburban Detroit. The arrest happened after Harrison Township residents called police to report a personal watercraft had broken down in a nearby canal.
Macomb County sheriff’s deputies found Mathers, 26, and her 22-year-old friend Jennifer Freeman walking along the street in their bathing suits and carrying life jackets.
The women told police their personal watercraft had had some mechanical trouble. Sheriff Mark Hackel told the Detroit Free Press that they could tell the two had been drinking. After questioning the women, police found they both had outstanding warrants.
Mathers was wanted for failing to appear in court for a hearing on a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace in Warren, Mich. She was transported to Macomb County jail where she was later released on a $3,000 bond.
Huntington Woods police wanted Freeman for a probation violation, but was she released when Huntington Woods police said they would not travel to Macomb County to get her.
After escorting the women to the Macomb County Jail, a deputy returned to the sheriff’s car and found a small container of white powder suspected to be cocaine in the backseat of the car. The substance was sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory. The matter remains under investigation pending the result of the laboratory tests.
