Despite the fact that V-chip technology is present in some 50 million television sets sold in the U.S. since 1996, only 7 percent of all parents are using it, according to a study released Tuesday by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. In reporting on the study, Wednesday’s New York Times observed that the V-chip has had little impact on ratings or viewing habits. Experts contacted by the newspaper blamed the lack of usage on the fact that few people are aware of what the technology is or how it works. Vicky Rideout, who headed up the Kaiser study, told the newspaper that many parents commented that they personally monitor their children’s viewing and see no need to employ the chip.
