Don’t say we didn’t warn you …
1. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Who’s in It? Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson
What’s the Deal? In the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster, security guard Larry Daley has to rescue Jedediah Smith (Wilson) and Octavius (Steve Coogan) from the Smithsonian Institute, after they are accidentally shipped to the enormous museum. And yes, an evil Pharaoh will come to life.
Why It’s a Bust: The movie was tentatively titled “Another Night at the Museum.” Entertaining as it may be, it sure sounds like a repeat (and an excuse to cash in on a franchise). (May 22)
2. I Love You Beth Cooper
Who’s in It? Hayden Panettiere
What’s the Deal? During his graduation speech, a nerdy valedictorian proclaims his love for Beth Cooper (Panettiere), the hottest and most popular girl in school. Much to his surprise, she shows up at his door that very night and changes his life forever.
Why It’s a Bust: The trailer is excruciatingly boring, and we expect so much more from Chris Columbus, who has directed staples like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and two Harry Potter movies. (July 10)
3. G-Force
Who’s in It? Nicolas Cage (voice), Penelope Cruz (voice), Will Arnett (voice)
What’s the Deal? A team of trained Secret Agent guinea pigs takes on a mission for the U.S. government to stop a diabolical billionaire, who plans to take over the world with household appliances.
Why It’s a Bust: A 3-D Jerry Bruckheimer cartoon where the world is in danger of being taken over by a food processor? Stick to live action, man. (July 24)
4. Final Destination: Death Trip 3-D
Who’s in It? Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Krista Allen
What’s the Deal? After a teen’s premonition of a deadly race car crash helps save the lives of his friends, Death sets out to collect those who evaded their end. And you can’t cheat Death.
Why It’s a Bust: The first one was kind of exciting; the second one not-so-much; the third one nobody saw. Do we really need to go over this a fourth time in 3-D? (Aug. 28)
5. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Who’s in It? Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner
What’s the Deal? Before his younger brother’s wedding, the ghosts of girlfriends past, present, and future take a womanizing bachelor (ahem, McConaughey) on a journey through his romantic history to help him comprehend his ways with women.
Why It’s a Bust: A Christmas Carol-meets-Over Her Dead Body-meets-How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. This entire movie seems like a Montage of Movies Past. If you’re a masochist, wait for the McConaughey marathon on cable. (May 1)
