Fox News Channel and CNN, both locked in a neck-and-neck ratings race
during primetime, broke from coverage of the war in Afghanistan
Wednesday to carry live helicopter footage of a stolen big rig, its
cargo of lumber on fire, racing through the streets of Dallas.
At one
point, viewers saw police firing at the driver.
The two cable news
networks continued coverage until the driver was brought to a halt by a
traffic pile-up and surrendered. Coverage was provided by Dallas station
KDFW, which for a time broke FAA rules imposed following the Sept. 11
attacks forbidding flights close to the Detroit airport. Two other
Dallas stations honored the rules and ceased their pursuit of the truck.
