Freeze Frame: A Snapshot Look at October Movies

[IMG:L]They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so–from just sizing-up movie stills that caught our eye–here’s the lowdown on October movies at a glance!

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: All aboard! Well folks, looks like we’ve got an official Oscar baitin’ Western on our hands, lined-up with heavy-hitters. We’re ready to ride to New Mexico. How ’bout you?

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

Genre:  Adaptation, Comedy, Satire

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Simon Pegg, Jeff Bridges, Megan Fox

Scoop:  Sidney Young (Simon Pegg) is a small-time, bumbling, British celebrity journalist who is hired by an upscale magazine in NYC. In spectacular fashion, Sidney enters high society and burns bridges with bosses, peers and superstars.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: This match feels so unlikely, even if friends, it must be a genuine satire. We’re sure just a few of you out there are waiting on edge to see Megan shine as a vapid Hollywood starlet…with the leads Kirsten Dunst and Simon Pegg.

American Carol

Genre: Comedy, Holiday

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Kevin Farley, Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight, David Zucker

Scoop: A cynical, Anti-American “Hollywood” filmmaker sets out on a crusade to abolish the 4th of July holiday. He is visited by three spirits who take him on a journey in an attempt to show him the true meaning of America.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  We think a comedy that spoofs Michael Moore has potential…as a short. Can’t imagine there’ll be much steam to take us through a feature’s worth of Chris Farley‘s bro’, doubling for Moore–eating, pontificating and re-telling a Holiday classic, now, July or in December.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Genre: Adventure, Comedy

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Drew Barrymore (Voice), George Lopez (Voice), Andy Garcia, Piper Perabo

Scoop: Self-indulgent Chloe (Drew Barrymore), a diamond-clad Beverly Hills Chihuahua, hardly notices Papi (George Lopez), a tough-looking Chihuahua who’s head-over-paws for the pampered pooch. But when Chloe gets lost in the rough streets of Mexico with only a street-wise German Shepherd to help her find her way home, Papi heads south of the border–joining forces with a motley crew to rescue his true love.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  Voice-over, cutesy pet movies–we’re scuuured! And perhaps worse–a posh pooch? Could be rote studio fare to watch, by the look of this photo. But there should be at least a few guilty pleasure gems for pet lovers, pre-tweens, and stoners.

Blindness

Genre: Adaptation, Drama, Foreign, Thriller

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Julianne Moore, Danny Glover, Gael Garcia Bernal, Alice Braga

Scoop: A man is struck blind, as is each person he encounters, who will then suffer the same unsettling fate. As it spreads, panic and paranoia set in across the city. The newly blind victims of the “White Sickness” are rounded up and quarantined within an abandoned mental asylum, where all semblance of ordinary life soon breaks down.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:   Hangin’ out in the looney bin (please excuse our incorrectness) must be a drag. Imagine how it’s quadrupled if you’re blind. This couple appears to be on the brink of despair–an emotion which Julianne Moore sure knows how to work! We’ll give it a chance.

Flash of Genius

Genre: Adaptation, Biopic, Drama

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Greg Kinnear, Lauren Graham, Dermot Mulroney

Scoop: 1960s. Midwest university professor and married father of six, Bob Kearn (Greg Kinnear) invents a wind-shield wiping device that’ll be used by every car in the world. But Bob’s dreams of hitting the jackpot are dashed, when an auto giant that embraced his creation, effectively shuns him. Ignored, threatened and buried in years of litigation, Bob becomes a man obsessed with justice and acknowledgement of his life’s work.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: Greg Kinnear‘s Detroit professor has found something fishy under the hood, too bad the avenging Michael Moore was only a young’un back then–otherwise we know he’d be right there next to Kearn. Either way, Kinnear always hits his mark.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Genre: Adaptation, Music, Romantic Comedy, Teen

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, Ari Graynor

Scoop:
Nick (Michael Cera) frequents N.Y.’s indie rock scene, nursing a broken heart and playing the bass with his queercore band, The Jerk Offs. Norah (Kat Dennings) is questioning her assumptions about the world. Though they have nothing in common, save their taste in music, their chance encounter leads to an all-night quest to find a legendary band’s secret show; it ends up becoming a first date that could change both their lives.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: Messy alert. Someone needs help, and while this scene looks suspiciously ‘non-NY indie rock’, we figure Cera and Dennings will bring some funk to the proceedings.

Rachel Getting Married

Genre: Drama, Comedy

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, Debra Winger, Bill Irwin, Tunde Adebimpe

Scoop: When Kym (Anne Hathaway) returns to the Buchman family home for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt), she brings a long history of personal crisis and family conflict with her. The wedding party’s abundant cast of friends and relations has gathered for an idyllic weekend of feasting, music and love, but Kym–with her sardonic one-liners and knack for bombshell drama–is a catalyst to ignite long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  What happens when two sisters have to take a good look at themselves in the mirror–right before a wedding? Good luck! And make room for all the baggage they’re bringing along. These two clearly sober up each other, and Jonathan Demme‘s teaming up with Sidney Lumet‘s scribe daughter Jenny, makes for a kinetic combo.

Religulous

Genre:  Documentary, Religious

Release Date: October 3

Cast: Bill Maher

Scoop: Comedian Bill Maher examines the presence of religion in many of the big news stories of recent years, from Muslim riots over cartoons to the Ten Commandments in front of courthouses, a born-again Christian in the White House and Scientology in the birthing room.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: Maher‘s semi-Cheshire cat smile isn’t hinting at smugness; so we’re thinking, if there’s no mockery involved, and just real investigation, this doc could be quite compelling.

Rocknrolla

An oldschool mobster, Lenny (Tom Wilkinson) knows the right wheels to grease and has his hand on the throat of any bureaucrat, broker or gangster that matters. But as high rollers and petty criminals jockey for dominance, a multi-million-dollar deal falls into the hands of a junkie rock star–Lenny’s stepson, presumed dead but very much alive.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  Love that there’s double-action foreground background tension involving Jeremy Piven and Ludacris. But admittedly, since it’s a Guy Ritchie flick, we won’t hold our breath in anticipation.

Ferris will have to penetrate his murky world, but he discovers that trust is a dangerous commodity.

City of Ember

Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Family

Release Date: October 10

Two of the students soon investigate corruption, on a mission to restore light to their city.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  That iconic, side-splittingly wily, Caddyshack-classic, Bill Murray grin, now on a city government official’s face, has us fully ready to tee up and see what’s going on in Ember.

The Express

Genre: Adaptation, Biopic, Drama, Sports, Period

Cast: Dennis Quaid, Rob Brown, Darrin Dewitt Henson

Scoop: The true story of Ernie Davis (Darrin Dewitt Henson), two-time All-American running back for Syracuse University who led his team to the national championship in 1960. In 1961, he became the first black man to win the Heisman Trophy. Later that year, he was the first pick in the NFL draft. But Davis never got the chance to play professional football; he was diagnosed with leukemia during the summer of 1962 and died nearly a year later.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: We know that coach/player huddle all too well. Inevitably sad but inspiring, our bet is that this Quaid/Henson period sports biopic, about a Heisman winner–who deserved more time in the spotlight–will score a touchdown.

Simultaneously, Poppy encounters other life challenges, that beg her to question: “is the glass half-full, or half-empty”?

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say: The combination of Sally Hawkins‘s accessible, electric demeanor, Mike Leigh‘s direction and the balled-up, color tissue paper covering Africa and Europe have us ready to jump to be a part of Poppy’s universe.

Angela, Scott and company attempt to leave the complex, but they find that the CDC has quarantined the building.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  Not a good sign when the help that’s come to save you has collapsed from a wound. Is there another extension to call when 911 isn’t working out? Not sure if this film will connect or not with its fans.

If a Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words, We Say:  Curious ‘stache on the lead, and… Okay, look, we’ll admit–this is simply one of our plucks because Madonna directed it. End of story … A high-profile, heady husband and wife celeb duo releasing their films within a week of each other? Hmmm? Can we please ask to be excused from the dinner table?
