Gene Hackman Gets Honorary Golden Globe Award

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will honor actor Gene Hackman with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his outstanding contribution to the entertainment field at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

Considered one of the most versatile and well-respected actors in American cinema, Hackman has worked on nearly 80 films in a career that has spanned over five decades and encompassed stage, television and features.

Hackman, 72, previously received three Golden Globes; one for Best Actor for the 1971 drama The French Connection, one for Best Actor for the 2001 ensemble comedy The Royal Tenenbaums, and one for Best Supporting Actor for the 1992 Western Unforgiven.

Hackman has also received five additional Golden Globe nominations including Best Actor for the 1974 suspense pic The Conversation; the 1975 sequel The French Connection II; the 1985 drama Twice in a Lifetime and the 1988 thriller Mississippi Burning; and Best Supporting Actor for the 1983 drama Under Fire.

Since his big-screen debut in 1964 in Lilith, Hackman‘s varied filmography includes Bonnie and Clyde, The Poseidon Adventure, Young Frankenstein, Superman, Postcards From the Edge, Loose Cannons, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Heist and Behind Enemy Lines.

The actor is currently working on the thriller The Runaway Jury opposite John Cusack and Dustin Hoffman. The film focuses on a young juror in Mississippi who becomes the swing vote in a trial centering on a landmark case against gun manufacturers.

Previous Cecil B. DeMille honorees include Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Hoffman, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery and Sophia Loren.

Hackman will be presented with the award at the 60th annual Golden Globe banquet at the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Jan. 19. NBC will air a live telecast of the show starting at 8 p.m. EST.
