Goldie Hawn was presented with the Cinema Icon prize by her Snatched co-star Amy Schumer at the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards on Thursday (30Mar17).

The Private Benjamin actress, who makes her return to cinema this year (17) after a 15-year break, was honoured onstage by her onscreen daughter Amy, who praised Goldie’s work on the set of mother-daughter comedy Snatched.

“She is the kind of performer who has you laughing, and then just a second later she has you crying and you are on this whole journey with her,” she told the audience. “And during this time you are just so grateful for these moments where you can just stop and say, ‘this person has made me so happy.'”

Goldie took to the Las Vegas stage to accept the award and recalled her first trip to Sin City in 1966, when she went to be a dancer at the Desert Inn but got a flat tyre on the way, leading to a man who had just returned from Vietnam helping her.

“I think when you look at what makes an icon, you look back on this journey. And this journey was one of uncertainty, of tenacity, of fearlessness, and a journey that taught me you can’t always go it alone,” she told the audience. “There are people, if you are open and trusting, that can help you get exactly where you need to go.

“So I say that if you are fearless, you are trusting, that you have tenacity, and if you like people and if you work in unison with others you too can be an icon.”

Other honorees at the ceremony included Naomi Watts, who was presented with the Distinguished Decade of Achievement Of Film award and Salma Hayek, who received the CinemaCon Vanguard Award.

Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam were named female and male stars of the year respectively, while Ansel Elgort, who stars in the upcoming Baby Driver, and Star Trek Beyond’s Sofia Boutella won the male and female stars of tomorrow prizes.

Other winners included Get Out creator Jordan Peele, who was honored with the Director of the Year accolade, Transformers: The Last Knight actress Isabela Moner, who took home the Rising Star Of The Year accolade, former wrestler John Cena, who won the Action Star of the Year, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales actor Brenton Thwaites for Breakthrough Performer Of The Year and Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani for Comedy Star of the Year.
