Just click on the sneak previews below to explore the creation of the Cinema of Cool.

Q&A with Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino
Rodriguez: “We both loved these types of movies and we could go and make a double feature. They’re just different enough that it creates that exact kind of experience you would have had going to the drive-thru. You really feel like you’re getting a double feature, your money’s worth.”
Tarantino: “If you need to know the whole history of Grindhouse then we didn’t really do our jobs. Robert’s movie has to work as a movie and my movie has to work as a movie. But when you put them together it’s got to work as a whole experience – if it works correctly it’s closer to a ride than it is going to see a movie.”

“I got a call one day and he said ‘Hey, this is Robert. I’m in traffic. I just thought of the best thing. She’s going to have a machine gun leg!’ I was like ‘All right.’ It wasn’t a big shock to me.”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Freddy Rodriguez

“Robert has a guitar sitting next to his monitor and plays songs and jams in between scenes. What director do you know who does that and has the freedom to do that?”

“One of my first talks with Robert I was like ‘I get it – you’re referencing the war in Iraq with this violence.’ And I get on this whole deep speech. And he was like ‘Nah. It’s just a zombie movie.’”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Naveen Andrews

“We had to watch these films, which I thought were just dreadful. I would look around and see Quentin and Robert laughing like maniacs and I found it funny for about two minutes. I was embarrassed. I thought, ‘What am I not getting here?'”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Josh Brolin

“I have known Robert for a long time, so I know how he works. It keeps you on your toes. You know that everything that they do is going to be original. If you don’t let go you won’t survive in it.”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Kurt Russell

“You think that Quentin knows a lot, but he isn’t going to know about that episode of Man from U.N.C.L.E. I did. Then when you say something, and he goes, ‘Oh, yeah, and then that character says this!’ Then he does the whole scene that you did, and then you realize that you cannot possibly keep up.”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Rosario Dawson

“Quentin and Robert are the actual physical Wikipedia of movies and TV shows and music, everything. They are those consummate fans. There is no middle ground—these are high stakes for them, because this is their life. I think that is something you can’t fake.”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Zoe Bell & Tracie Thoms

Bell: “When he started describing the stunt sequence to me I was like ‘Oh fuck, this is like a cool movie and you want me to be in it!’ Someone was like ‘It is so sweet of Quentin to do that,’ and I am like ‘Dude, you make it sound like I had a f*cking choice.’ It wasn’t like ‘Would you like to be in my movie?’ It was like “Here! Remember these lines.’ ‘Holy shit. Okay.'”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Mary Elizabeth Winstead

“Quentin was so welcoming and gregarious and friendly and aware of all my work, which was probably the weirdest thing. He was like ‘That episode of True Calling you did was awesome!’ And I was like ‘What? Quentin Tarantino actually saw that?’ It’s pretty crazy.”

[IMG:L]Q&A with Sydney Poitier, Vanessa Ferlito & Jordan Ladd

Poitier: “Quentin has a posse of women that he just hangs with and he listens to every word they say and what they watch. He is a huge fan of The Tyra Banks Show because his lady friends watched it and now he watches it. He just gets into their brain, so that when he starts to write the dialogue it is coming out entirely naturally.”
