Guillermo del Toro hands over Pacific Rim 2 reins

Pacific Rim filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro has handed over control of its sequel to Steven S. DeKnight, which marks his big screen directing debut.
Del Toro’s 2013 apocalypse epic was a critical and commercial hit, taking in more than $400 million in worldwide ticket sales. However plans for the filmmaker to make a follow-up stalled, and its release date was postponed indefinitely last year (15).
He has now given his blessing for the sci-fi franchise to continue without him at the helm. TV producer and writer DeKnight is set to take the reins on Pacific Rim 2, his first feature film as a director.
“Now Pac Rim is a known property and we can expand big!” Del Toro psoted Twitter, Met w(ith) (Steven S.) DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!”
DeKnight also took to social media to confirm his involvement, and thank all those involved with the film, writing, “Huge heartfelt thanks to @Legendary (Entertainment), @RealGDT (Guillermo Del Toro), and producer extraordinaire Mary Parent for placing their trust in me. #PacficRim2.”
No provisional release date for Pacific Rim 2 has been officially announced at the time WENN went to press.
