The Hype: Transitioning from inexperienced rookie to seasoned veteran is a hard stage in a anyone’s life. For Baltimore firefighter Jack Morrison (Phoenix), making the transition often shortchanges his wife and kids. In order to survive these trying times, he relies on the support of his mentor and chief, Mike Kennedy (Travolta) and his second family–the men of the firehouse. When Jack becomes trapped in the worst blaze of his career, his life and the things he holds important–family, dignity, courage–come into focus. As his fellow firefighters of Ladder 49 do all they can to rescue him, Jack’s life hangs by a string.

The Hype: After nearly drowning in a bathtub, Adam (Whannel) awakens to find himself in the middle of a torture chamber, accompanied by two other bodies. Unable to remove the chains shackled to his hands, Adam notices that one of the bodies, Lawrence Gordon (Elwes), is still alive. Between them is a man lying dead in a pool of his own blood after apparently shooting himself in the head. Adam and Dr. Gordon piece together the clues and finally realize that they, too, must make a seemingly impossible set of choices for their lives.

The Hype: Father Lankester Merrin (Skarsgard) thinks that he has glimpsed the face of Evil. In the years following World War II, Merrin is relentlessly haunted by memories of the unspeakable brutality perpetrated against the innocent people of his parish. While drifting through Cairo, he is approached by a collector of rare antiquities to join a British archeological excavation in a remote region of Kenya. They have unearthed a Christian Byzantine church in inexplicably pristine condition–as if it had been buried on the day it was completed. But beneath the church, something much older sleeps, waiting to be awoken. In the place where Evil was born, Merrin will finally see its true face.

Hunted by two backwoods dope farmers, they encounter death-defying rapids, tree-hugging hippie chicks–and a crazy old mountain man (Burt Reynolds, in an apt cameo).

  Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid

  The Stars: Johnny Messner , Morris Chestnut; directed by Luis Llosa

The Hype: A scientific expedition is assembled by a powerful pharmaceutical company to search for a rare black orchid in the deep recesses of the jungles of Borneo. Their hope is that the orchid can be used to unlock the secrets of youth and immortality. What they soon discover is that the orchid is already being used by a denizen host of giant snakes to augment their strength, size and vitality–not to mention their appetites. – Top
