Dare we even publish a “sexiest poll” without the likes of Tom Cruise somewhere on the list? Fortunately we don’t have to face such a notion ’cause this hot 39-year-old garnered 11.9% of your vote and isn’t going away soon. As far as we can see, he’s pretty much a permanent fixture on “sexy” lists.
Let’s face it, Tom‘s a natural. He can balance a million things on his plate at once: acting, producing and looking after his new flame, to name a few.
His most recent venture, Vanilla Sky, includes all three of these elements, but best of all, it has the perfect amount of Cruise close-ups (making it pleasurably obvious that director Cameron Crowe fully understands the concept of “lingering longer” on Tom. Thank you, Cameron, from us, the gawking audience).
Sexy male star #3 has also been making headlines causing “Cruisemania” in Europe while promoting Sky. At the London premiere, a few lucky attendees proffered their cell phones to Tom, who gave a quick “hi-ya” to friends on the other end or left a message on their answering machines. (Shucks, wish it could’ve been ours; we’d never wash that tape–er, erase it, and we’d post the recording online so you could listen, too). How does he come up with All the Right Moves all the time, anyway?
Of course, we can’t forget the newest Cruise news: his love affair with the comely Penelope Cruz. While gorgeous couples abound in Hollywood, we can only sit and wait for the pan-out with Cruise and Cruz. There have been rumors of a secret wedding on the horizon, and Penelope has even confirmed she’ll be taking a “short time-out” from film. (More time to keep an eye on Tom, eh, Penelope?) Admittedly, we’re just jealous she snatched him up so quickly.
How He Did in Our Poll Last Year:
Cruise hit the #4 spot last year, proving he’s getting better with age. (Anyone willing to make a bet he’ll hit the #2 spot in 2003? Get ready to pay up, you doubting Thomases…wink, wink.)
Sexiest Role:
Hands down, no argument allowed, Maverick in Top Gun will forever be the most classic, most sexy role in Tom‘s history. C’mon, he was in the prime of his youth (24 years old) donning a white towel in the locker room, a military uniform in the courtroom, and tight, sweaty jeans in the volleyball pit–all in one flick. Mav’s a definite must-have.
Best Quote:
Tom recently told Oprah, “I enjoy seeing people do well in life. The pleasure you get out of helping someone, and seeing that smile and that life might be better in some way…That is happiness.” A movie star with a heart. Enough said.
Sexiest Scene:
In Vanilla Sky when Tom is at his birthday party, he watches Penelope from across the room and sort of stands there in awe…wow, now that’s sexual connection!
Physical Feature We Love:
We said it last year, and we’ll say it again: it’s that super-smile. And, if it’s OK to add a part two for 2002, it’s those eyes…those eyes (gasp)!
In His Future:
Get ready for sci-fi adventure unlike anything we’ve seen Tom in before. His next climb atop the big screen will make him a futuristic cop–again in uniform–[lick your lips] in Minority Report. Together with Steven Spielberg‘s genius, this summer hit should be a “must see.” He’s also set to work with director Anthony Minghella in Cold Mountain, in which he’ll play the part of a wounded confederate soldier, but it’s not likely we’ll see that film until 2003.
