Jada Pinkett Smith: ‘We gotta keep diversity debate moving’

Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t worried that Chris Rock took aim at her decision to boycott the Oscars, because her only concern is keeping the diversity debate at the forefront of people’s minds.
The actress was left frustrated after members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences failed to nominate any black actors or creatives in the major categories at this year’s (16) 88th Academy Awards, prompting her and her husband Will Smith to boycott the ceremony last month (Feb16).
And when Chris took the stage as the host of the prizegiving event, he was relentless in addressing the so-called “OscarsSoWhite” controversy, and even took aim at the Smiths in his opening monologue.
“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties; I wasn’t invited,” he joked. “I get it, Jada’s mad her man Will wasn’t nominated for Concussion. I get it. It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild, Wild West.”
And Jada has responded to the joke for the first time since the ceremony, after photographers asked her what she thought of the quip while walking through the Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday (05Mar16).
“It comes with the territory, sweetheart,” she declared. “It comes with the territory but we gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. There’s a lot of stuff we gotta handle, a lot of stuff in our world right now. We gotta keep it moving.”
While Jada insists on moving past the scandal, R&B singer/actor Tyrese, who supported the Oscars boycott, was among the first to condemn Chris for “tearing down” Jada.
“I didn’t watch – I didn’t – but online people are talking and someone posted the tasteless joke that Chris Rock did in his opening,” he wrote on Instagram.com shortly after the Oscars. “Did you really use your STAGE to tear down and diminish one of the strongest most fearless black women IN this town as the world watched.
“Jokes are just jokes right????,” Tyrese continued. “Not when someone is trying to affect change……… Not when someone is willing to put it ALL on the line to affect change for our daughters and sons of the future…….. Shame on you Chris Rock…”
