Jamaican music icon Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake dies

Jamaican music pioneer Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake has died, aged 75.
Blake had been recuperating from a stroke he suffered in January (16), but his health took a turn last week and he passed away on Saturday (27Feb16) at a Kingston, Jamaica hospital.
Blake was revered as the owner and operator of Merritone Music, the country’s oldest continually operational sound system. The Merritone sound was the first of its kind to bring Jamaican music to international cities such as London, New York, Los Angeles and Seattle.
As a music producer, he helped launched the careers of Jamaican entertainers such as his wife Cynthia Schloss and Beres Hammond.
Throughout his decades in music, he received numerous awards, including the Jamaican government’s Order of Distinction, an honour in recognition of his contributions to the island’s entertainment industry.
