Jameela Jamil has branded late designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away on Tuesday (19Feb19), a “fat-phobic misogynist”.
The designer, who is considered one of the most important fashion visionaries of the 20th and 21st centuries, died aged 85 – reportedly from pancreatic cancer. His death prompted widespread tributes from fashion stars and celebrities across the globe, with Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, Stella McCartney, Naomi Campbell, and Cara Delevingne among those to pay their respects.
However, Jamil, who has found fame in the U.S. in show The Good Place, labelled German-born Lagerfeld, who once called singer Adele “a little too fat”, a “fat-phobic misogynist”.
Jamil shared her thoughts on the designer after linking to an article posted by website wearyourvoicemag.com, entitled Stop Mourning Oppressors: Anti-Condolences For Karl Lagerfeld.
“I’m glad somebody said it. Even if it is a little soon,” she tweeted. “A ruthless, fat-phobic misogynist shouldn’t be posted all over the internet as a saint gone-too-soon. Talented for sure, but not the best person,” she added candidly in a second tweet hours after Lagerfeld’s death.
The 32-year-old actress received plenty of support from her 600,000 plus Twitter followers. However, some did question whether or not she’d ever called out the designer when he was alive – to which she responded, “It was heavily reported.”
She later said she plans to write an essay on the subject, adding: “How problematic the industry has been for girls is too complex for this.”
Lagerfeld is the latest target of Jamil, who has positioned herself as a campaigner and advocate for women’s body positivity. She has been a vocal critic of Kim Kardashian, criticising the reality star for using her influential platform to promote appetite suppressants and weight loss products.
