Kendrick Lamar drops surprise album

Rapper Kendrick Lamar has surprised fans by releasing a new album without prior warning.
The Alright star’s disc untitled unmastered. dropped on digital platforms and streaming services on Thursday night (03Mar16) without advance notice, and fans only became aware of its existence when Kendrick tweeted a link to iTunes.
The record features eight tracks which did not make it onto his 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. The titles contain time stamps, for example “untitled 01 08.19.2014” and the majority were created in 2014, apart from one track, “untitled 07 2014 – 2016″ and another from 2013.
Kendrick recently performed an unreleased song as part of a medley during his controversial Grammys performance in February (16) and sang another unknown piece on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in January (16).
He recently told 2dopeboyz.com those songs did not make the album but he still liked to play them, saying, “You see all these performances on these late night shows… I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album. But I think probably close to ten songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.”
Kendrick was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy for To Pimp a Butterfly but lost out to Taylor Swift’s 1989. He did however take home prizes including Best Rap Album for the record, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for Alright.
During the interview, he confessed he was amazed he achieved 11 Grammy nominations and five wins, but believes it is because his messages about race and police brutality resonate with listeners.
“You have to be confident enough to know that the message will get to the people around the world and they will understand it,” he said. “That’s a gift that God to put in me to continue to talk about these things. The message is bigger than the artist.”
