Leigh pulls out of film festival over Israel’s new citizens bill

The Jewish director was set to appear at a film festival in Jerusalem in November (10) but he has pulled out because he’s upset by a new bill, passed last week (ends15Oct10), which requires non-Jewish immigrants to pledge loyalty to a “Jewish and democratic” state.

Leigh has written to the organisers of the event, revealing he was opposed to Israel’s policies on Gaza, which has led many stars to boycott the country in recent months, but called the loyalty oath the “last straw”.
