Madonna Shades Kendall Jenner’s Pulled Pepsi Commercial on IG

Madonna has made a dig at Pepsi bosses online by recalling how they pulled her drinks advert years before the Kendall Jenner commercial controversy.

Executives of the soft drinks company were swamped by backlash online promptly after the advert was launched on Tuesday (04Apr17) as many took issue with its storyline, which featured Kendall taking part in a peace protest and handing a can of Pepsi to an on duty police officer, who cracks open the can as everyone rejoices.

Pepsi bosses issued an apology and removed the footage on Wednesday (05Apr17), but before they did so, Madonna took the opportunity to criticize the advert and recall the time her Pepsi advert was pulled.

“When you wake up and realize that S**t just really doesn’t make sense! #chosen Side Note: My Pepsi commercial was pulled 30 years ago because I was kissing a black saint! #ironic,” she wrote on Instagram next a clip of the Kendall advert.

In 1989, Madonna’s commercial was dropped after she courted controversy over her Like a Prayer video, in which she can be seen kissing a black saint. Even The Vatican decried the video, calling it “blasphemy”.

As a further dig at Pepsi, Madonna subsequently shared a throwback picture showing her wearing a red dress and boots, carrying a can of Pepsi’s rival Coca-Cola.

In Pepsi’s statement, they noted they had “clearly missed the mark” with their ad and “did not intend to make light of any serious issue” and directed an apology to Kendall for putting her in this position.
