Maren Morris has called for more sexuality in country music.
The I Could Use A Love Song star opened up about the stigma surrounding country artists in an interview with BBC News, and urged those working in the industry to celebrate “confident and sexy women”.
“The stereotype is you’ve either got to be this religious, virginal conservative, or the wronged woman burning the house down,” the 29-year-old shared. “People in pop and R&B are confident and sexy and sexual, and they’re celebrating it – so why don’t we, in country, write these songs?”
The star went on to encourage DJs at country radio stations to give equal representation to female artists, after it emerged that only 11.3 percent of music played was by female acts.
“As a woman in this industry, I wish that radio would come into this century and honor the songs that are actually popular,” she continued. “I was looking at the country radio chart in the U.S. and, for the first time in 20 years, there were no women in the top 30.”
The interview came after The Middle hitmaker, who titled her second album Girl as a protest against the sexism in the industry, teased her Instagram followers on Tuesday (June 11, 2019) with two saucy snaps from her upcoming Playboy shoot, writing in the caption: “strip it down. something with @playboy is coming next week…”
