Mark Hamill’s original lightsaber from the Star Wars films has sold for $450,000 at auction.

The famous film prop, as used by Hamill’s Jedi character Luke Skywalker in films A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, was purchased by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! during the Profiles in History Hollywood Auction on Wednesday (28Jun17).

It was previously in the archives of Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz, who worked on the two features, and was constructed using an old Graflex flashgun camera from the 1930s. The weapon will sit alongside other pieces Ripley’s has acquired from the sci-fi franchise, including portraits of Star Wars characters and hair from the Chewbacca suit worn by actor Peter Mayhew.
