Matt LeBlanc: ‘I left my ego at the door for Top Gear’

Matt LeBlanc and his Top Gear co-presenter Chris Evans were “like good friends right off the bat”.
Fans of the BBC motoring show were stunned when former Friends star Matt was announced to be hosting the programme alongside Chris earlier this month (Feb16). While the duo make something of an unlikely pair, Matt has revealed they quickly formed a bond on the job.
“He (Chris) and I seem to be hitting it off,” he said, according to Variety. “We were like good friends right off the bat. We’ve been having a really good time. He’s very collaborative. I think his philosophy is like mine: you leave your ego at the door and you go in and do your job.”
When the news was first announced, Matt described himself as a “petrolhead” and added the role was a dream for him. Speaking to journalists at the BBC Worldwide Showcase sales event on Monday (22Feb16), Matt explained the new series is set to be vastly different from the original – hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.
“I’m a big fan of the original Top Gear,” he added. “It is like this giant ship that is sailing along, and presenters will come and go. Chris and I will enjoy our time here, and it’s fun to come on board. And there’s a new shape to it now, and there’s a new energy about it, and it is interesting to be part of the evolution of that. I feel like I have a voice in it, but I have a voice among some really, really smart voices, which is nice, and that’s what Friends was like too.”
One thing that is slightly daunting for Matt is the fact that the show is unscripted and unlike anything he’s done before. The actor has picked it up quickly though and is learning to have fun with improvising.
“It is loosely scripted, but there’s a lot of leash with that. You can bend things a little bit,” he explained. “It also depends on the environment. When we were shooting the film we just did, there’s not a lot of controlled environments – there’s a lot variables – so the words need to bend to fit that. Chris is quick on his feet, as am I.”
