Monday: ‘Welcome to the Captain’

If nothing else, TV has been getting newer lately.

Lost finally premiered on ABC last week; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles debuted alongside the return of Prison Break a few weeks ago for Fox, which also welcomed back TV’s biggest show, American Idol; AMC dealt us its methamphetamine dramedy Breaking Bad recently; HBO premiered the psychodrama In Treatment, which on weeknights serves as at least a great worst-case-scenario show; and tonight CBS launches its midseason Big Bang Theory replacement, Welcome to the Captain.

Fans of Big Bang needn’t worry, however: The sitcom hasn’t actually been “replaced”–in fact, it was renewed for another season–but it’s another strike casualty that has been in reruns for quite a while and thus had its plug pulled for the time being.

So in comes Welcome to the Captain, about a Hollywood apartment building called El Capitan and its quirky tenants.

Jeffrey Tambor, a TV veteran if ever there was one (Arrested Development, The Larry Sanders Show, et al.), stars as Uncle Saul, arguably the nuttiest of all who live in The Captain. Others include Fran Kranz, who is convinced to move into the building by his friend, played by Chris Klein (American Pie movies); Raquel Welch as, fittingly, an aging acupuncturist; and Joanna Garcia (Reba, Freaks and Geeks) as a beautiful heartbreaker.

Here’s hoping Captain is half as kooky as it sounds–and that it doesn’t get taken off the air almost immediately as a result!
