Rupert Murdoch is apparently narrowing the focus of his Sky Global holding company as part of his strategy for acquiring Hughes Electronics’ DirecTV from its parent company, General Motors, the London Financial Times reported Wednesday. According to the newspaper, Murdoch is pulling out News Corp’s stake in Gemstar TV Guide and the TV software company NDS so that GM will not be hit with a giant tax bill when the deal is completed. Sky Global would presumably be left with stakes in its home satellite services, which presently cover most of the world, except for the U.S. The maneuver, the FT commented, was “the latest development in a long and ever more complicated deal.”
