MUSIC NOTES: Ruckus at Rap Awards

As they say, the show ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings — or at least until a riot breaks out.

Police shut down the taping of the annual Source magazine Hip Hop Awards show Tuesday in Pasadena, Calif., after what was described as a “large fight” broke out in the audience. One man was badly beaten during the chaos. A witness told the Reuters wire service that about 75 people rushed the stage to avoid the CDs and bottles that others were throwing in the auditorium. Some also said that the fighting carried over to the backstage area.

The scuffles apparently began before the show started. Punches were allegedly thrown as rapper DJ Quick and his entourage arrived and there was some shoving going on inside the Auditorium. Eminem, Dr. Dre and L’il Kim were among the stars that attended the event.

Police shut the show down 2-1/2 hours into the taping, when only a half-dozen awards had been handed out. But a pre-written press release said that Dr. Dre had received five awards, including a lifetime achievement honor. Eminem was supposed to take home two, according to the release.

Eminem MORE DRAMA FOR EMINEM: What is it with the women in this guy’s life?

Last year, the real slim whatever was sued for $10 million by his mom, who said he defamed her in his lyrics. Now his estranged, soon-to-be-ex-wife has done the same. Kim Mathers filed suit on Monday, citing the violent lyrics in his song, “Kim,” as the cause. Eminem has already filed for divorce from Kim Mathers, who was most recently in the news for attempting suicide.
