Napster upgrade shuts out users

The dwindling number of Napster users were shut out of the popular music-trading service this weekend unless they downloaded the new version of Napster software, Reuters reports. The new version, monikered 10.3, contains audio fingerprint technology, which should allow for more songs to be transferred by the service’s users. Napster, in compliance with a March 5 court order, has filtered all copyrighted songs, preventing them from being “shared” on the service. As a result, Napster’s usage has dropped precipitously, which may make this latest move by the beleaguered company to reinvigorate Napster one of its last.
