New BBC chairman named

Gavyn Davies has been named to succeed Christopher Bland as chairman of the BBC board of governors, touching off complaints of political cronyism by the Conservative opposition. Davies, a member of the Labor Party, resigned his position as chief international economist and managing director of Goldman Sachs, although he said he might continue as a consultant. In a statement, he insisted that “impartiality is uppermost in my mind.”
