NEW YORK STATIONS GO BACK ON THE AIR
Several New York television stations, whose over-the-air signals were snuffed out when the transmitter atop the World Trade Center collapsed, have now resumed low-power broadcasting on a limited basis from alternate sites. (WCBS-TV, the CBS-owned station, was the only New York station with a fulll-power backup transmitter on the Empire State Building and thereby became the sole source for news about the tragedy for 1.7 million New Yorkers without cable.) WNBC-TV, is reportedly back on the air from a site in Alpine, NJ, where many of the city’s FM radio transmitters are located. WABC-TV and the PBC outlet WNET-TV say they are rushing to get on the air from the Alpine site this week. WNYW-TV, the Fox-owned station, is using the Empire State Building tower, where it had previously set up an HDTV transmitter. WPIX-TV, the WB station, is also reportedly using a low-power transmitter on the ESB. WWOR-TV (UPN), WPXN-TV (Pax), and WNJU-TV (Telemundo) have not announced plans to begin regular broadcasting and are currently available via cable only.
