Canadian director Atom Egoyan‘s latest film, Ararat, will open the Toronto International Film Festival in September, marking the third time the acclaimed filmmaker has kicked off the prestigious film festival, the largest in North America, Reuters reports. Other gala films in the festival this year include the premieres of director David Cronenberg‘s Spider and White Oleander with Michelle Pfeiffer and Renee Zellweger. The festival runs Sept. 5-14.

Sharon Osbourne–wife to Ozzy and mother to Aimee, Jack and Kelly–has been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer and will undergo surgery Wednesday, the family’s publicist told Reuters. The type of cancer has not been released but, according to a statement by the Osbournes, Sharon is expected to make a full recovery.

Martha Stewart can’t get away from her recent stock imbroglio that easily–or maybe she can. She abruptly canceled her Wednesday appearance on CBS’ The Early Show late Tuesday when she learned she’d be asked about the investigation into her stock dealings. She was supposed to go on the show to talk about icebox desserts.

Spencer Breslin, the cherubic kid who starred with Bruce Willis in Disney’s The Kid, will join Mike Myers in the film Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat. As the popular children’s story goes, the wily cat who messes up the lives of a boy (Breslin) and his younger sister also shows them the beauty of the simple things.

After some local authorities initially resisted the venue, The Grateful Dead has been granted permission to perform two reunion concerts in Wisconsin. The age-old hippie group will hold its shows at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre near Milwaukee on Aug. 3 and 4.
