Purple Reigns at the SAG Awards’ Style Scene

The most unmistakable trend on the red carpet of this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards was a powerful passion for purple, especially among the cast of Desperate Housewives, who showed up wearing complementary couture: Felicity Huffman in violet, Teri Hatcher in dusty mauve, Eva Longoria in lilac and Marcia Cross in lavender.

“It was many months of planning: should it be orange or blue?” Felicity teased us. “Actually, that was just synchronicity. I’m telling you, it was not planned.” Either way, it was a winning look–perfectly accessorized with their SAG Awards.

If Charlize Theron was mining for our top honors, she hit paydirt in this luxuriously coal-black matte silk gown with a dramatic front plunging neckline (mirrored by a deep-V in the back) and a sophisticated mermaid shape at the hemline, brightened with vintage Fred Leighton jewels.

The ebony stunner was made especially for her by “my friend Giorgio Armani,” she revealed. “I’ve been dying to wear it somewhere and it seemed appropriate tonight.”

After Armani debuted his Prive collection in 2005, Charlize was the first actress to wear his couture design at last year’s SAG Awards ceremony. “I am very honored that Charlize has marked my first anniversary by selecting Prive again for SAG,” Armani said.

[PAGEBREAK]Pinning–not cutting–her hair into a full-bodied, bouncy bob, Eva Longoria looked every inch Old Hollywood in Badgley Mischca’s icy sheer lilac off-the-shoulder gown…but not without a little dress drama. “I had another one and it didn’t fit,” explained Eva, who performed a few self-styled alterations to find the perfect fit in the sub gown. “I had to sew this one.”

[PAGEBREAK]The Housewives’ purple haze fell over more than just the ladies. When Eva Longoria’s NBA beau Tony Parker, whom she thought was on the road, surprised her by showing up at her hotel to escort her to the awards, he did so in a purple shirt that just happened to match her last-minute gown.

[PAGEBREAK]There was no gender confusion to be had when Transamerica star Felicity Huffman arrived in a delicate violet strapless Nicole Miller sheath, which she chose simply “because I thought it looked good.” In fact, it looked better than good, especially paired with18-karat gold chandelier earrings with colored diamonds and an amethyst ring, all designed by her fashion friend Charlie Lapson.

[PAGEBREAK]Leave it to Nicolette Sheridan to march down the red carpet to the beat of her own fashion drummer, breaking from the Housewives’ purple posse with her pale pistachio Kevan Hall fishtail gown, which couldn’t help but pop in the group shots. “It works beautifully with the purple,” Marcia Cross told her.

[PAGEBREAK]Though Brenda Strong showed up a shade away from her cast mates’ colors, she was anything but blue in an electric indigo creation from Nick Verreos, a designer competing on the current season of Bravo’s Project Runway, along with Martin Katz jewels and Stuart Weitzman shoes.

[PAGEBREAK]No man is an island, especially when they look as smashing as Lost‘s Josh Holloway in his sleek three-button tuxedo and steel grey tie, complimented with his Sawyer-esque stubble, giving his classic leading man looks a rakish rough edge. We’re still trying to figure out where Josh’s found his stellar suit, but he definitely didn’t scrounge it out of some battered airline luggage.

[PAGEBREAK]SAG winner and glowing mom-to-be Rachel Weisz is in the midst of her own personal Renaissance, reflected by her deep blue flowing, floor-length skirt festooned with floral embroidery from the famed French fashion house Rochas. “They took my measurements and they made it in Paris and sent it over,” said Rachel, “and luckily I haven’t gotten too big for it yet. It still fit!” She paired it with Fred Leighton’s heavy chinoiserie pendant and earrings, and heels from Streamline Moderne.

[PAGEBREAK]The statement Reese Witherspoon made in her Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche gown was as simple as black and white: she and hubby Ryan Phillippe are the very epitome of youthful sophistication. And after Chanel slipped up at the Golden Globes by lending her a gown another star already wore, she played it safe this time. “This is my dress–I didn’t borrow it from anyone,” said Reese, who then joked. “I called Kirsten Dunst and said ‘Do you have anything I can borrow?’”
