Queen scraps Christmas party

The royal family hosts a biennial holiday celebration at Buckingham Palace in London to thank staff for their hard work, but the 2010 bash has been scrapped as the recession bites.

A palace spokesman tells the AFP, “Given the current economic climate, it was thought that it was appropriate for the household to show restraint. The Queen is acutely aware of the difficult economic circumstances facing the country.”

The party is usually held for around 600 employees at a cost of around $80,000 (£50,000).
