When asked about the almost unprecendented number of black nominees this year (including Denzel Washington and Halle Berry) at the Academy Awards nominee luncheon last Monday, Best Actor nominee Will Smith told Reuters that he is not surprised that the majority of Oscar contenders are white given the makeup of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. However, he is more concerned about being recognized for his work than for the color of his skin:
“You can’t allow an award to be the validation of your work. Halle’s work, Denzel’s work and my work was good work this year. I think we all just want to be judged as human beings, period,” he said.
