Reese Witherspoon urges fans to sign equal rights petition

Reese Witherspoon is urging fans to sign a petition launched to give women equal rights in America.
The Legally Blonde star, 39, has taken to Instagram to support an initiative backed by Patricia Arquette and California Senator Hannah Beth Jackson, and she wants her fans to be aware of the issues and sign up.
“Every one of my amazing fans out there… this is important,” the 39-year-old Oscar winner wrote. “Did you know that currently in the United States of America, women do not have equal rights under the Constitution?
“Equal pay, equal healthcare and equal protection under the law. My friend #patriciaarquette & Senator #hannahbethjackson are working very hard with political leaders to pass an Equal Rights Amendment for all women. I’ve included the link to the petition in my profile. I encourage you to sign it and spread the word! #equalmeansequal.”
Arquette has become a force in the women’s rights movement after speaking out for fair pay at last year’s (15) Academy Awards. The actress recently told WENN her controversial Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech cost her film roles.
“I knew that it could cost me a lot of jobs, because my industry would be part of these companies who would have to pay people more or fairly,” she said. “I’ve lost two movies because of that and I’m OK with that. One (film executive) said something very dumb that made it very obvious that was the reason. That person’s been fired, not because of me; I think karma just came and threw a big rock at their head!”
But she still thinks her comments were valid and she’s happy they sparked a debate, which has helped change legislation.
“Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Governor (Jerry) Brown passed the strongest Fair Pay Act in the country here in California,” she continued, “and that’s really significant, because California’s the 10th largest economy in the world.”
