Ricky Martin Wept When He First Saw Edgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace

Ricky Martin burst into tears when he first saw Edgar Ramirez costumed as Gianni Versace for a TV show.

The Puerto Rican singer and actor stars in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, about the murder of Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997.

Martin portrays Versace’s boyfriend Antonio D’Amico, and has now shared how emotional he became when he saw Venezuelan actor Edgar dressed as the Italian designer.

“I was in a fitting and Edgar walks in as Gianni,” he said during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night (18Jan18). “The first time I saw him, I started crying. I started (tearing up). So, I said, ‘Edgar, if you ever doubt of how you look, focus on my first reaction.’ It was really honest and sincere. I’m very happy to be working with this cast.”

The Versace family have distanced themselves from the TV show and Maureen Orth’s 1999 book on the subject, Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U. S. History, deeming them to be “works of fiction”.

However, Martin is certain that the TV show not only accurately depicts real events but also delves deeper into other issues in the 1990s, particularly the treatment of homosexuals.

“It’s one of those things, a gay man killing gay men – so turn the other way and allow it to happen. And that is not supposed to be happening, and we have to constantly be talking about this because history repeats itself. And we cannot allow this to happen. It’s a story about human rights, social justice. I’m just very, very, very happy to be a part of this project,” the 46-year-old, who recently married husband Jwan Yosef, added.
