The exodus of U.S. production companies from Hollywood to Toronto has begun to deplete the existing talent pool in the Canadian city, resulting in a sharp increase in production costs, the New York Times reported today (Tuesday). “We’ve had to bring in crews from Montreal and pay their hotel costs and per diem,” Ed Gernon, an executive of Toronto-based Alliance Atlantis, told the newspaper. Nevertheless, the Times reported, American filmmakers say that production costs are at least 30 percent higher in the U.S. than in Canada. According to the newspaper, film and TV (including commercials) production activity in Toronto surpassed $856 million in 2000, up 8.3 percent over the previous year.
