Four-time Grammy-winning tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson died Saturday of heart failure and emphysema. He was 64. Mr. Henderson recorded several albums and performed with fellow jazz musicians throughout his career. His lyrical style also brought him critical acclaim. “You could hear roots coming out of Lester Young, Stan Getz,” Sonny Buxton, a former jazz club owner in San Francisco who booked Henderson at Milestones in the mid-1980s, told The Associated Press. “There was a wailing, a search in his playing. Within a few notes you knew that it was Henderson.” Mr. Henderson was born in Lima, Ohio. He studied at Kentucky State College and Wayne State University before spending two years in the U.S. Military. His close friends and relatives nicknamed him “The Phantom” for his ability to drop out of sight in order to escape the demands of his career, AP reported.
