Sean Penn’s Tough Love Helped Son Hopper Quit Drugs

Sean Penn issued a harsh ultimatum which forced his son Hopper to make the decision to go to rehab.

Hopper, 23, a model and actor whose mother is the House of Cards actress Robin Wright, admits he was destroying his life with drugs.

After a binge landed him in hospital, the actor and director told his wayward son he had to enter drug rehabilitation or he would be kicked out on to the street.

“I was doing a lot of stuff but meth(amphetamine) was the main one that brought me down,” the now recovered youngster tells Britain’s ES magazine. “I went to rehab because I woke up in hospital and my dad said, ‘Rehab? Or bus bench?’ I was like, ‘I’ll take the bed’.

“Thank God I got out of that because that was the worst time in my life. Because it’s not fun when it gets to a point where you just need it.”

Hopper, who is named after his dad’s late pal, Easy Rider actor Dennis Hopper, also credits his dad’s decision to cast him in a minor role in his 2016 drama The Last Face with helping to keep him on the straight and narrow.

“I know he kind of wrote the part for me,” he explains. “He really wanted to work with me and it ended up being great. But yeah, maybe it was about giving me just a little structure.”

Sean and Hopper’s relationship has not always been so strong however as the reformed tearaway admits he struggled with the breakdown of his parents’ 14 year marriage.

He says he was, “pretty mad because they had split up before and then got back together, and then they did it again. I was young and thinking: ‘Are you just f**king with me and my sister (Dylan, 25,)?’ I mean, it was not the best. It was tough, talking to them. Because they were both pretty broken too, I think.”

Hopper has now got his life back on track; he is the face of Fendi’s latest eyewear collection and has filmed a new movie, Netflix comedy War Machine, alongside Brad Pitt.
