Sharon Jones cancels White House performance due to pneumonia

Soul singer Sharon Jones has been forced to pull out of a planned performance at the White House due to pneumonia.
The 60-year-old was slated to take the stage with her band the Dap-Kings as part of the South by South Lawn music event in Washington, D.C. on Monday (03Oct16), but on Sunday (02Oct16), she took to Facebook to announce she is too sick to perform as planned.
“Unfortunately I won’t be able to perform at the White House tomorrow,” she wrote. “I’m home in Augusta (South Carolina) recovering from pneumonia and am too sick to travel. The Dap-Kings are still going to perform and luckily Binky Griptite and Saun & Starr will join them to cover for me.”
The veteran singer has been faced with health issues for years, after she was diagnosed with stage two pancreatic cancer in 2013 and spent much of that year undergoing invasive surgery and chemotherapy to treat the disease.
She beat the cancer and made a triumphant return to music, with her journey documented in a film entitled Miss Sharon Jones!. However, when Jones attended the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September (15), she announced that her cancer had returned.
Since then, she has been convalescing at her friend’s home in Sharon Springs, New York and undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in July (16), she revealed the cancer had spread to her lung, liver and lymph nodes, and the disease has been elevated to stage four.
Despite her gruelling treatments, Jones has been alternating between performing and recovering, and is scheduled to perform various dates in the U.S. until the end of 2016.
In addition to the Dap-Kings, other artists slated to take the stage at the South by Southwest-inspired festival include the Lumineers, Gallant, DJ Beverly Bond and Black Alley.
Leonardo DiCaprio will also be on hand to screen his new documentary Before the Flood and discuss climate change with U.S. President Barack Obama.
