Sharon Stone weeps at AIDS gala

The Basic Instinct star took to the stage to hand the Award of Courage to computer tycoon Bill Gates at an American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) gala in Washington, D.C.

Stone, amfAR’s global fundraising chairman, wiped away tears as she told Gates “people will continue to live because of you”, recognising the $2.5 billion he has donated to HIV organisations around the world.

Gates, who lost a cousin to AIDS in the 1980s, highlighted the need for a cure, telling the crowd, “We need to invent a vaccine. We need to keep the funding levels going up. We need to grow out new prevention tools. There are still millions of people being affected.”
