Singer Gayle McCormick dies

Sixties singer Gayle McCormick has died, aged 67.
The star lost her lengthy battle with cancer on Tuesday (01Mar16) in St. Louis, Missouri.
McCormick launched her music career with St. Louis band Steve Cummings and The Klassmen, but after moving to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, she joined a group named Smith.
They landed a deal with Dunhill Records and shot to fame with a cover of Burt Bacharach’s Baby, It’s You, which had also previously been recorded by The Shirelles and The Beatles. The song received renewed attention in 2007, when filmmaker Quentin Tarantino used it on the soundtrack to Death Proof.
Smith’s other hits included a revamp of The Band’s The Weight, which also featured in Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider movie.
McCormick later went solo, releasing three records before walking away from the industry.
