Hollywood.com wants to give you the inside look—or we should say, the outside look—on how to get Katherine Heigl’s winning hair, Mary-Louise Parker’s side-swept mane and Heidi Klum’s pouty lips. We talked to their personal style gurus to get the scoop in this year’s old Hollywood-inspired looks for the Emmys.
Heigl’s Hair: ‘Grey’-t Look

Grey’s Anatomy’s Katherine Heigl may have taken home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, but the real drama was all about what was adorning her anatomy. She’s already all over everyone’s best dressed list for that elegant white Zac Posen gown. She definitely looked stunning, but she had a few helping hands along the way.
Celebrity hair stylist Campbell McAuley tended to Katherine’s tresses for Emmy night, but it was not the first time he worked with her. As Hollywood’s new ‘It’ girl, Katherine has graced the covers of InStyle, Entertainment Weekly and Cosmo Girl, and has left the fate of her locks in Campbell’s hands.
On Emmy night the look was French Hollywood starlet—a modern day ‘La Vie En Rose.’
“We wanted something classic, but with a slight edgy feel to it,” Campbell said. “I did not want to make it polished, but a sculpted great hairstyle.”
What many viewers at home may not have seen on their TV screen was the fabric of her dress. Looking close-up, the material of the dress was denim and Campbell wanted to work with the same texture and try to replicate that with the hair to create a 1940s sense of style.
To get Katherine’s up ‘do, here are Campbell’s Steps:
• First: Start with Frederic Fekkai’s Coiff pre-styling UV protector on the hair, which he said not only prevents sun damage but with all the moisture in the air it still holds the style together
• Next: Use styling gel and a little gloss to shine the hair–Campbell used Velcro rollers on sections of her hair and blew dry one section at a time
• Finally: When the hair was set, he left two of the front curlers in and brushed the rest of it out and pulled it in to loose ponytail and sculptured three low buns
“I wanted it to have broken edge[s] and instead of brushing, I used my fingers. Don’t worry if your hair is falling off or flying away,” he said.
“It’s easy. The key to this was not to go elaborate. It’s easy to do, but it had a direction. A lot of times with the styles it’s complicated and she felt very comfortable on the red carpet and sold it.”
And sold it she did! Katherine took home a statue, but according to Campbell while he was helping her to get ready at her house, she actually thought her co-star Chandra Wilson would win. She said the hardest thing about the night was most likely going to be presenting. Well, she was a little off about that prediction, but was right on about her style choice.
Campbell’s styling tips:
1. “Don’t be afraid to use your hands to style your hair. You don’t need to use hair brushes. Get in there and work that sculpture.”
2. “Try Fekkai brands—they’re consumer-friendly, contain no alcohol and are great for sculpting.”
3. For Katherine’s style, give yourself 40 minutes—“the key is let the hair set when it’s in the rollers so the curl is locked in.”
[PAGEBREAK]Mary-Louise Parker’s Sweeping Style ‘Hit’

Another Outstanding Lead Actress nominee for Weeds, Mary-Louise Parker hit another style ‘high’ in a red satin Dolce & Gabbana mermaid gown and hair by Adir Abergel.
When Adir first saw her dress, he said he pictured her hair very sleek and very smooth and up above the shoulders, but this red hot momma wanted it down.
After meeting in the middle, they both decided to put it half back and half down over one shoulder. “It still had a lot of movement around the face—just waves, not curls—to represent the curves in her dress,” Adir said. The style was a sleek version of Veronica Lake.
To achieve the look he started out by applying Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel to her roots and adding a dime size of Fekkai Coiff Defense Pre-Style Thermal/UV Protectant to the ends for shine.
He then blow-dried the hair and put it in two-inch Velcro rollers to set.
Third, he took a one-inch curling iron and loosely wrapped the hair around it leaving the ends out and tugging on it to create a soft wave. He then blow-dried the bangs to the side and left them loose and natural.
And lastly, when he took half the hair up, as a special touch he secured it with a 1930’s diamond brooch by Ineke Peskin and intertwined it with a loose braid. To finish the look he applied Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Creme all over the hair and used the popular brush by Mason Pearson to create a sleek luminescent curl.
His style trick: Spray a little Fekkai Coiff Fini Sheer Hold Hairspray on the brush and the comb out the curls for those great Veronica Lake waves.
[PAGEBREAK]Heidi Klum’s Secret Lips

Victoria’s Secret supermodel and Project Runway host (which was also up for a golden statue) Heidi Klum was true to her stylish form and stayed true to her VS roots by wearing the Very Sexy line of makeup to the Emmy Awards.
In between taking care of her three kids and snacking on pizza that her friends brought over to help her get ready, Heidi slipped into her berry color, off-the-shoulder, art deco-inspired couture Dior gown, which was the inspiration behind the 1930s, old Hollywood glamour that Linda Hay, Victoria’s Secret’s head makeup artist, envisioned—but with a fresh twist.
Two parts of the face really needed to be emphasized and de-emphasized to create the look.
“I wanted a really defined, strong eyebrow,” Linda said. “In the ‘30s they were bare, but to make it more modern and in the now I wanted to make a good, solid, heavy eyebrow and dark red matte lips worked well and brought balance to the naked eye.”
Here are the tools:
• Eyebrows: Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Dark Chocolate, which will work on any skin type
• Eyes: Linda used makeup from Heidi’s new limited edition makeup collection for Victoria’s Secret called the Heidi Collection, which hits stores next month. Her choice—the mosaic eye color called Beautiful using only the pewter, pale pink and silver shades to keep the eye bare and naked.
• Lashes: Victoria’s Secret High Definition Mascara in Black Out and individual false lashes on the top and bottom. Style note: Use at least four layers of mascara.
• Cheeks: Love Life blush, a pretty, flushed flirty color only applied to the apples of the cheeks
• Lips: Lip pencil called Look Out and Don’t Stop lipstick
• Body—Victoria’s Secret Shimmer Mist to give the look of a sheer fine layer of gold shimmer
Linda noted that to get the look, you have to be very precise with the lips and eyebrows and then it just takes a lot of mascara. The time: Only 15 or 20 minutes. Helena Faccenda with MSN’s Style Studio then had the task of sculpting Heidi’s lovely locks. Helena wanted to create a matte texture to her hair and to make it very loose—“like it was done 15 hours ago.”
Like a true artist, Helena pinned most of Heidi’s bulk and length underneath her hair to create the ‘30s look.
In going for full glamour, she didn’t use any shine products—only Phyto Volume Activ and Schwarzkopf hairspray—making it loose and fun, and pulling it to one side to show off Heidi’s rock crystal and diamond earrings that she designed specially for the Emmy’s.
Follow these steps to get Heidi’s Emmy tresses:
Step 1: Part your hair from ear-to-ear, take the back of hair near the nape of the neck and put it in a tight ponytail, roll it in ball and pin flat to your head.
Step 2: Take the long layers and separate them into two-inch sections and with a three-inch curling iron curl each row around the head in different directions.
Step 3: Don’t use any hair products and help set hair with Phyto Volume Activ
Step 4: Use a Mason Pearson brush and brush straight down from the part.
Step 5: Take the right side of the hair and pin it behind your ear or hide the bottom ponytail with pin curls.
Step 6: Piece it out and finish it in place.
