T.I. to be honoured at ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards

Rapper T.I. will be feted with a new prize at the upcoming American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.
The Live Your Life hitmaker, who is known for his community activism and acting roles in films like Ant-Man, will receive the inaugural ASCAP Voice of Culture Award, which organisers created to “celebrate ASCAP songwriters and artists who have had a major influence on music and culture”.
“T.I. has conquered the worlds of music, TV and film, helping to popularise a new sub-genre of music in the process,” group president Paul Williams shares of the hip-hop star’s roots as a trap music pioneer.
“His significant contributions to hip-hop music, support for other artists through his record label, philanthropy, community activism and memorable onscreen roles have had a profound impact on today’s music and culture.
“There is no one more deserving to receive the inaugural ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award.”
Also set to be celebrated at the 32nd annual event is the legacy of Motown Records, with officials receiving the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award to mark the label’s 60th anniversary, reports Billboard.
There will also be a tribute performance staged by a string of Motown artists at the Los Angeles prizegiving on 20 June (19).
Performers are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
