Terry Jones makes first public appearance since revealing dementia diagnosis

Comedian Terry Jones made his first public appearance since revealing his dementia diagnosis on Sunday (02Oct16), when he was honoured with a special BAFTA Cymru award.
Last month (Sep16), the 74-year-old Monty Python star announced he has been suffering from primary progressive aphasia – a type of dementia affecting the brain’s frontal lobe.
His sad news came days after officials at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Cymru (Wales) Awards announced Jones is this year’s (16) recipient of their lifetime achievement gong, in honour of the Wales-born comic’s work since the 1960s.
On hand to present him with the trophy at the Cardiff ceremony was his Monty Python co-star Michael Palin, who detailed his long friendship with Jones starting with their days as students, explaining “life seemed more exciting when Terry was around.”
“The first sketch we performed was as a pair of police officers at the Edinburgh festival and for the next few years we were inseparable,” Palin continued. “His force of character and tireless workaholism kept us all up to the mark. He has been relentlessly prolific while being a wonderful friend.”
Palin noted the accolade was “hugely deserved” for Jones, before inviting him to the stage and giving him a warm embrace.
Jones was joined by his son Bill, and the funnyman was greeted with a standing ovation, before he jokingly told the crowd to “quiet down” in order to let his son speak on his behalf.
An emotional Bill said with tears in his eyes, “We would like to thank everyone. I know it’s a great honour for dad to win this award. We’re so proud of him… with the struggles we’re having at the moment, it’s been hard.”
Among the other Welsh artists honoured at the prizegiving was make-up artist Sian Grigg, who was praised in a special pre-taped video message by Leonardo DiCaprio. Sian has worked with the Oscar winner for the past two decades, collaborating with him in films such as Titanic and The Revenant.
