BLANCHETT IS THE CANCER VIXEN

Never underestimate Cate Blanchett’s willingness to go outside the norm. In a discussion with MTV, the actress revealed that she has a new pet project that she’d like to star in: Cancer Vixen. It’s based on Marisa Acocella’s graphic novel about her fight with breast cancer in 2004-2005 — a fight she happened to win without health insurance. In the animated short on the graphic novel’s website, the vixen says: “Cancer, I am gonna kick your butt, and I’m gonna do it in killer, 5-inch heels.”

CHAN CHANNELS INNER MIYAGI

Who else would you get to play The Karate Kid’s Mr. Miyagi? Jackie Chan is in negotiations to redo the role immortalized by Pat Morita for this remake, starring the precocious Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son) as the kid, according to Variety. Like the original, the movie will examine the relationship between a martial arts expert and a boy who is picked on by bullies, but it will be relocated to China. Thus … Chan.

JOAQUIN: THE DOCUMENTARY

Casey Affleck has decided to get his feet wet behind the camera by directing a documentary about his friend and brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix. As you may recall, Phoenix recently announced he’s leaving the acting biz to pursue a career as a rapper, with an album to be produced by Sean Combs. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the doc will follow Phoenix as he gets his start, beginning with his first public performance Friday at a Las Vegas club. You got that Phoenix wants to be a rapper, right? This one I’ve got to see.

FRASER EYES A DRAMA

I know it’s hard to believe, but Brendan Fraser is capable of doing a movie in which he isn’t being chased by mummies or dinosaurs. If you’ve ever seen Gods and Monsters, you know he has the chops. Now, he’s decided to branch out again, playing opposite Harrison Ford in a yet titled fact-based medical drama. According to the Reporter, he’ll will play John Crowley, the father of two children who were diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder for which he’s told there is no cure. Unbowed, he seeks out an experimental and sometimes irascible doctor (Ford) who works to find a way to save the children’s lives.

A NEW EAST OF EDEN?

Sure, John Steinbeck’s classic novel has been adapted a few times before — the most memorable being the 1955 film starring James Dean — but there’s always room for one more version, especially when directed by John Adams helmer Tom Hooper and Christopher Hampton to write the screenplay. East of Eden, of course, is Steinbeck’s retelling of the Cain and Abel story, set in California’s Salinas Valley. I just wonder if they can find the same J.D., “You’re tearing me apart!” intensity in their casting of Cal. Wait, I know the perfect person: James Franco [pictured above AS Dean in the TV movie]!

PILGRIM CASTING HEATS UP

The casting of cult comic-book Scott Pilgrim vs the World is getting curiouser and curiouser. It starts with Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright’s odd choice of Michael Cera to play the cool Scott, a guy in a rock band, “between jobs,” who falls for the dangerously fashionable, roller-blading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers and must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends before he can find true happiness. Then he cast Live Free or Die Hard‘s Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona and newcomer Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, a 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian schoolgirl who dated our title hero but was dumped for the beautiful and perfect Ramona. She continues to hang out with our hero and carries a flame for him. Now, according to Cinematical, Chris Evans has joined the club as Lucas Lee, skateboarder, movie star, and evil ex of Ramona. Color me intrigued.
