‘The Fate of the Furious’ Crosses $1 Billion at Global Box Office

Universal Pictures

The Fate Of The Furious has cruised past the $1 billion box office barrier worldwide after racking up a third week in pole position on the North American chart.

The action thriller, which features a top cast including Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Charlize Theron, and Helen Mirren, banked another $19.4 million from fans in the U.S. and Canada, helping to boost its global total to become the fourth highest-grossing release in Universal Pictures’ history.

Jurassic World currently holds the title with $1.67 billion, ahead of the last Fast & Furious release, Furious 7, at $1.52 billion, and Minions at $1.16 billion.

Back in the North American countdown, new Eugenio Derbez and Salma Hayek comedy How to Be a Latin Lover impressed by debuting at number two with a strong $12 million take, ahead of Bollywood hit Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which entered at three with $10.1 million.

Tom Hanks and Emma Watson’s new movie The Circle scraped into a disappointing fourth place with $9.3 million, after failing to win over critics with the futuristic thriller, about a rising female employee at a top technology and social media company, where she uncovers a shocking surveillance experiment.

The new top five was rounded out by Alec Baldwin’s animated movie The Boss Baby.

The Fate of the Furious will face a tough race to stay ahead of the competition next weekend (05-07May17), once the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel hits North American cinemas on Friday (05May17).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Kurt Russell, has already gotten off to a big start, launching internationally with $101.2 million.
