Given the recent monumental success of Avatar, the question on everyone’s mind has been “well how does it stack up to Gone With the Wind and other classic films?” Well here’s our answer. It’s the Top 60 grossing films of all time, adjusted for inflation.
This chart was a lot of fun to put together and while I think that comparing Gone With the Wind to Avatar is about as appropriate as comparing the architecture of Civil War Atlanta to the futuristic world of Cameron’s Pandora, this is still an interesting exercise and a good frame of reference.
Keep in mind that this is a very inexact science and that on the older films you are in essence taking an estimated gross, based on an estimated box-office film rental (the old way that they tracked this stuff) and then an average ticket price is used to divide into that estimated number to come up with an estimated number of admissions, which is then multiplied by an average ticket price, which then gives you an estimated adjusted gross…whew! Inexact at best!
