Some of America’s top computer and software manufacturers have announced
their opposition to a proposed law that would require any new devices
capable of recording content over the Internet to include
copyright-protection utilities.
At a Washington news conference on
Monday, representatives of Intel, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq
Computer and others said that the bill would hamper product development
by subjecting it to political and regulatory scrutiny.
The legislation
is also opposed by the Consumer Electronics Assn., whose vice president
of technology policy, Michael Petricone, told Bloomberg News: “The
legislation as drafted for the first time ever would restrict consumer
use within the home of free over-the-air television.”
