U2 fans petition to save studio

U2 fans have started a petition to stop Dublin authorities from demolishing the studio where the group recorded three of their albums, including their most recent, All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

As of Tuesday, an Internet petition had already logged almost 2,300 signatures to save Hanover Studios, long considered U2’s headquarters.

Dublin resident Fintan Kennedy started the petition, calling himself “simply a U2 fan.”

“U2 …are the band of my generation, just like the Beatles or Elvis were to other generations,” Kennedy told The Irish Times.

“I certainly believe that the Hanover Studios are as important as Sun Studios or Abbey Road. We should recognize this as an example of Ireland’s musical heritage which should be cherished.”

Lawyers for U2 will appear at a hearing today to object to the Dublin Docklands Development Authority’s plans to level the studio and adjoining buildings to create a public space.

The DDDA claims the wharf where the studio is located is the area’s unique feature and the demolition of the buildings is necessary its economic and social development.

The petition from U2 fans can be accessed at www.saveu2studio.com.
