Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, is urging filmmakers to be wary of people’s feelings when planning future movie projects.
Alluding to the Sept. 11 attacks, Valenti said at a Virginia trade show on Wednesday: “Be fearful. Be anxious. That’s OK.”
Valenti‘s comments come on the heels of the results a new study conducted by the Entertainment Industries Council, which revealed that following the attacks Americans are most interested in laughter first, adventure second, sex third and violence dead last.
According to Reuters, 83 percent of Americans agreed that comedy is what they’re seeking when they turn on the TV or go to the movie theater. Action/adventure stories ranked as their second favorites with 75 percent, while 55 percent listed sex and romance as their third entertainment choices.
When asked which sort of material would make a person avoid a certain program or film, the number-one choice among those polled was violence.
