Columbia Movie Theaters: Ragtag Cinema
Located in the heart of Columbia, Ragtag Cinema’s history dates back to 1998 when the all-volunteer Ragtag Film Society began screening films at a downtown concert venue. In 2001, this project transformed into Ragtag Cinemacafé, a movie house that served food from a local bakery. After undergoing many changes throughout the years and with help and funding from the community, the current Ragtag Cinema opened in the old Coca-Cola bottling plant in 2008.
Ragtag Cinema shows a combination of the latest Hollywood films, older fan-favorites, and lesser-known releases that you won’t find at most other movie theaters. Ragtag Cinema screens its films using digital and 35mm projection. The movie house is taking safety precautions against COVID-19, requiring guests to either provide proof of vaccination or a negative test result.
Aside from its history and unique variety of films, what makes Ragtag Cinema unique is the attached bakery and bar called Uprise Bakery where patrons can visit before or after their film. Reviewers love Marshall Cinema for its reasonable prices and friendly service. The movie theater is even rumored to be haunted! According to The Marshall Democrat-News, the theater’s owner Kate Thompson said that she and her family had heard and seen mysterious things in the building.
