Some disheartening news from the world of sci-fi: Avatar 2, the sequel to James Cameron‘s record-shattering 2009 blockbuster, is as at least “four years away,” according to producer Jon Landau. Initially, Cameron was said to be aiming to produce a follow-up by 2014; alas, there are more pressing matters on his docket, like producing schlocky horror flicks, building fancy submarines, and milking more cash out of Titanic. And given the director’s famous penchant for working on his own schedule, a January 2016 (or thereabouts) Avatar 2 release could at best be labeled optimistic.
