HOLLYWOOD, July 13, 2000 -– Will the “X-Men” stamp out scary villains? Or will they at least stamp “Scary Movie” out of box office domination? The superhero actioner is this weekend’s only major new release, but the big question is whether it can rival the impressive and unexpected $42 million debut that “Scary” posted.
Here’s a brief overview of the flick:
“X-Men”
“X-MEN” (See the trailer) The Skinny: Genetically advanced superhumans band together to defend the world against another group of (bad) genetically advanced superhumans. The Upside: Finally, a superhero movie that (mostly) lives up to the hype: Good story, good cast, good action. Even the dialogue isn’t all that stupid. The Downside: Have you ever heard of the X-Men before? We thought so.
Meanwhile, look for continued healthy business by recent hits such as “The Perfect Storm,” “Chicken Run” and “The Patriot,” while other summer stock, such as “Shaft,” begins to fade.
